An E. coli outbreak linked to unpasteurized Raw Farm cheddar now includes two cases of HUS kidney failure. Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure, is a complication that affects about seven percent of E. coli patients.

HUS symptoms usually set in about one week after E. coli symptoms which include abdominal cramps and diarrhea that can be bloody. They include:

  • Skin that easily bruises
  • Pale skin
  • Decreased urine output
  • Swelling of the legs, ankles or feet
  • Lethargy
  • Bleeding from the nose or mouth
  • Bloody diarrhea

Anyone with these symptoms should seek immediate medical care as HUS can be fatal. Those at highest risk of developing HUS are young children and people with weakened immune systems. Treatment for HUS includes blood transfusions, plasma exchange, dialysis, and kidney transplants.
