For the third time in three months, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) is investigating a food poisoning outbreak where ground beef is the suspected source. The agency hasn’t provided much information about the outbreak except that it began in August and that ground beef is contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
The other two outbreaks were caused by Salmonella.

ShopRite Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak
In July, the agency announced an investigation of a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef sold at ShopRite stores which sickened 18 people in four states from April 27, 2023, to July 6, 2023, before ending in August. Seven people were hospitalized.
Illnesses were reported from four states New Jersey (11), New York (5), Massachusetts (1), and Connecticut (1). The patients ranged in age from less than one year old to 97 years old, about 20 percent of them were under five years old.
Illinois Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak
In June, a ground beef Salmonella outbreak in Illinois was announced. The outbreak has sickened 26 people in six Illinois counties -Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will. The illnesses were reported between April 25 and May 18.
