A Salmonella Stanley outbreak linked to wood ear mushrooms imported by Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. of Santa Fe Springs, CA has expanded to include 43 people four of whom have been hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since the agency’s last update, on September 24, 2020, two additional cases have been reported.

Wood ear mushrooms are also called Kikurage, Dried Black Fungus, Dried Fungus, or Mu’er/Mu Er/Mu-Err. Wismettac has issued a recall.  Health officials are urging restaurants to check recall information as several clusters of illness were linked to restaurants that served the mushrooms on ramen.

They reported first experiencing these symptoms on dates ranging from January 21, 2020, to August 26, 2020. Four illness clusters were linked to restaurants that served the mushroom on ramen. The number of cases reported from each state is: AZ (1), CA (27), CT (1), GA (1), IL (5), LA (1), NJ (2), NY (1), PA (2), WI (2).
