Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Raw Chicken Products

The CDC closed its investigation of the 2018 Salmonella Infantis outbreak from raw chicken on February 21st, 2019.

Unfortunately, the investigation was closed while the outbreak is still ongoing.  The CDC concluded that this strain of Salmonella is endemic throughout the chicken industry.

As of the date the investigation was closed 129 people from 32 states have been identified as sickened. Of those, 25 have been hospitalized and one has died.

You can get Salmonella from chicken if you consume under-cooked meat, touch raw chicken, or have food preparation areas and utensils that become cross contaminated with Salmonella during the storage or preparation process. You can also get Salmonella by feeding your pets raw chicken pet food. Your pet can then spread it directly to humans or to surfaces that humans later contact.

The CDC and USDA-FISIS has shared their findings with the chicken industry and have requested the industry take steps to reduce Salmonella contamination.
