Updated July 11 with dozens of illnesses A raw milk Salmonella outbreak linked to Raw Farm in California that was originally thought to have sickened 19 people in California in 2023, actually caused 165 illnesses in four states making it the largest raw milk Salmonella outbreak in a decade, according to the California Department of Public Health. Twenty people were hospitalized. Four of them were also infected with Campylobacter, E. coli, or both.
Raw Farm, which used to be called Organic Pastures, has been linked to several outbreaks.
Raw milk outbreaks are known to disproportionately affect children and that as the case with this outbreak. The patients ranged in age from less than 1 year old to 87 years old with a median age of 7. Sixty-two percent of the patients with lab-confirmed cases said they consumed Ram Farm milk before experiencing the onset of foodborne illness between September 21, 2023, and December 20, 2023.
Investigators collected samples from the dairy, from milk purchased at stores, and milk collected from patients’s homes. Three samples from the dairy and one from store-bought milk tested positive for the outbreak strain cultured from patients.
In October 2023, the reporting on the outbreak was as follows.
A raw milk Salmonella outbreak has been linked to Raw Farm in California, according to the OC Health Care Agency. The farm recently issued a recall for its raw milk and raw cream products, consumers who have purchased these items shouldn’t consume them.
Seven people in Orange County are sick and 12 cases in San Diego County have been reported. The patients range in age from 1 to 41 years old. Three children were so sick they needed to be hospitalized.
