Minnesota is the state hardest hit in a Salmonella outbreak linked to Infinite Herbs organic basil sold at Trader Joe’s. The seven-state outbreak includes 12 illnesses and one hospitalization. Four people in Minnesota have been sickened.

The Minnesota patients are all from the Twin Cities metro area and range in age from 3 to 59 years old, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. After eating Infinite Herbs organic basil, they developed symptoms of a Salmonella infection including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever between Feb. 15 and March 27, 2024.

The Minnesota Department of Health is working with the Minnesota Agriculture Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the investigation of this outbreak.

The FDA said Trader Joe’s has removed the tainted Infinite Herbs basil from store shelves in all states. Trader Joe’s did not issue a recall, neither did Infinite Herbs.

The recalled organic basil was sold in 2.5-oz clamshell packages at Trader Joe’s stores in the following states: AL, CT, D.C., DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, and WI. Consumers who have purchased this item should not eat it.
