Freehouse II, LLC of Salisbury, NC has issued a recall for lemons, limes, Valencia oranges and red potatoes for potential Listeria contamination. The recalled items were sold in mesh bags and in bulk bins at a number of grocery store chains including Wegmans. At the time of the recall, no illnesses had been reported. However, consumers who have purchased these items recently should check recall information carefully as Listeria can cause serious illness and death.
Symptoms of a Listeria infection include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
Freehouse issued the recall after Listeria was discovered on a piece of packing equipment during routine testing. The company has ceased production of these items while it takes corrective action.
