A ham and pepperoni Listeria recall has been expanded to include2.3 million pounds of 27 products sold under 12 brand names, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS). The recalled brands are: Wellshire, Alexander & Hornung, Food Club, Butcher Boy, Niman Ranch, Garrett Valley Farms, Open Nature, Amish Country, Amish Valley, Lancaster, Five Star, and Big Y. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
At the time of the recall, the company was unaware of any illnesses associated with these products. However, symptoms of a Listeria infection can take as long as 70 days to develop, so consumers who may have eaten these products before the recall should monitor themselves for symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Pepperoni and Ham Listeria Recall
On December 5, 2021, Alexander & Hornung of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, a business unit of Perdue Premium Meat Company, Inc., issued a recall for approximately 234,391 pounds of fully cooked ham and pepperoni products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The company discovered the problem during routine testing.
Some of the products included in the recall were sold by multiple retailers, others are store brands. For example, Big Y is a grocery chain with stores in MA and CT. Open Nature is a Safeway store brand.
The recalled ham and pepperoni products were distributed nationwide. The establishment number “EST. M10125” appears inside the USDA mark of inspection on the packages of these products. The 17 products recalled for potential Listeria contamination have the following descriptions, sizes, and “sell by” dates:
