Keeler Family Farms of Deming NM has issued an onion Salmonella recall in connection with a multistate outbreak. The recall includes red, yellow, and white onions shipped to Keeler from a supplier in Chihuahua, MX from July 1, 2021, through August 25, 2021. Keller distributed the onions to wholesalers, restaurants, and retail stores in all 50 states and the District of Columbia
The recalled onions were sold in 25-lb. and 50-lb. mesh sacks with labels marked with the brand name MVP and the words “product of MX.” Consumers should not eat onions unless tehy know where they are from as Salmonella can casue serious illness.
Onion Salmonella Outbreak
This 37-state onion Salmonella outbreak includes 652 illnesses and 129 hospitalizations. Many of the people sickened told health officlas that they had eaten restaurant food containing onions before they became ill.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis, include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea that can be bloody. The people sickened in this outbreak range in age from less than 1 year old to 97 years old. Patients told health officials that they first developed salmonellossis symptoms on dates ranging from May 31, 2021, to September 30, 2021.
As of October 21, 2021, 652 illnesses had been reported from 37 states. The number of cases reported from each is: Alabama (3), Arkansas (12), California (9), Colorado (1), Connecticut (4), Florida (5), Georgia (2), Illinois (37), Indiana (1), Iowa (3), Kansas (14), Kentucky (9), Louisiana (5), Maryland (48), Massachusetts (12), Michigan (9), Minnesota (23), Mississippi (2), Missouri (21), Nebraska (8), New Jersey (5), New Mexico (8), New York (12), North Carolina (14), North Dakota (4), Ohio (7), Oklahoma (98), Oregon (2), Pennsylvania (7), South Carolina (3), South Dakota (8), Tennessee (10), Texas (158), Utah (3), Virginia (59), West Virginia (1), and Wisconsin (25).
