Ground beef sold at Walmart, Food City and other stores is being recalled because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. On June 13, Lakeside Refrigerated Services of Swedesboro, N.J issued the recall after it was notified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) that a sample of the product had tested positive during routine testing.
The recalled ground beef, produced June 1, was sold under the brand names Marketside Butcher, Thomas Farms and Value Pack. At the time of the recall, the company was not aware of any confirmed illnesses but consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as E. coli can cause serious illness and death.
Symptoms of an E. coli infection include abdominal cramps and diarrhea that can be bloody. These symptoms usually develop within three days and last about a week.
The recalled products all bear the establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the USDA mark of inspection:
- “MARKETSIDE BUTCHER ORGANIC GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF” in 1-lb vacuum packages with and a “use or freeze by” date of 07/01/20 and lot code P-53298-82.
- “MARKETSIDE BUTCHER ORGANIC GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF PATTIES” in 1-lb. vacuum packages containing four ¼ lb. pieces and a “use or freeze by” date of June 27, 2020 and lot code P-53934-28.
- “MARKETSIDE BUTCHER ORGANIC GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN / 7% FAT” in 3-lb. vacuum packages containing three 1 lb. pieces and a “use or freeze by” date of 07/01/20 and lot code P53929-70.
- “THOMAS FARMS GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF PATTIES 85% LEAN / 15% FAT” sold in 1-lb. tray packages containing four ¼ lb. pieces and a “use or freeze by” date of 06/25/20 and lot code P53944-10.
- “THOMAS FARMS GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF PATTIES 80% LEAN / 20% FAT” sold in 4-lb. tray packages containing 10 ¼ lb. pieces and a “use or freeze by” date of 06/25/20 and lot code P53937-45
- “THOMAS FARMS GRASS-FED GROUND BEEF PATTIES 85% LEAN / 15% FAT” sold in 1-lb. vacuum packages containing four ¼ lb. pieces and a “use or freeze by” date of 06/27/20 and lot code P53935-25
