Falafel E. coli Outbreak

Health officials have conducted genetic tests on the E. coli cultured from each patient. Results show that all 20 people were sickened by the same strain, meaning all of them were exposed to the same source of contamination.

Fifteen of the 18 people interviewed by health officials said they were ALDI shoppers. Six of them specifically remembered eating Earth Grown brand falafel before they developed E. coli symptoms including abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

Ranging in age from 1 to 71 years old, the outbreak patients first developed symptoms on dates ranging from July 13, 2022, to September 13, 2022. Illnesses have been reported from six states: Florida (2), Iowa (1), Kansas (1), Michigan (11), Ohio (1), and Wisconsin (4).
