The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) is investigating a new Listeria outbreak. A food source has not yet been determined, and information about how many people are sick or which states are included has not been released. No meat and poultry Listeria recalls have been issued in 2025.

Here is a look at recent Listeria outbreaks linked to meat and poultry products, which the USDA FSIS regulates.

2024-2025 Yu Shang Listeria Outbreak

A deadly Listeria outbreak linked to Yu Shang ready-to-eat meat and poultry products ended in March after causing 24 illnesses in nine states. Twenty-two people were hospitalized, and three families suffered the loss of their infants.  

When the outbreak was announced in November 2024, Yu Shang issued a recall for all products produced before October 28, 2024.

In 2024, Boar’s Head liverwurst and other deli-sliced meats were linked to a Listeria outbreak that sickened 61 people in 19 states. Ten people died.

2021 -2023 NetCost Deli Meat and Cheese Listeria Outbreak

A deadly Listeria outbreak linked to deli meat and cheese sold at NetCost and other stores ended in March 2023, with 16 illnesses, 13 hospitalizations, and one fatality. One pregnant woman suffered a miscarriage.

A two-state Listeria outbreak linked to Tyson pre-cooked chicken caused three illnesses and one death.  The outbreak triggered an 8.5 million pound recall.

2021 Deli Meats Listeria Outbreak

four-state deli meat Listeria outbreak caused12 illnesses, 12 hospitalizations, and one death. The illnesses were reported from four states: Florida (1), Louisiana (1),  Massachusetts (7), and New York (3) among patients ranging in age from 40 to 89 years old. 2020 Deli Meat Listeria Outbreak

In October 2020, a three-state Listeria outbreak linked to Italian-style deli meat sickened 10 people, all of whom were hospitalized. One person died. The illnesses were reported in Massachusetts, New York, and Florida.

2016-2019 Deli Meat and Cheese Listeria Outbreak

A 2019 four-state Listeria outbreak linked to deli meat and cheese sickened eight people, killing one of them. The outbreak included patients from Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York, and New Jersey who were sickened between 2016 and 2019. All of them were hospitalized.

2018 Johnston County Ham Listeria Outbreak

A 2018  Listeria outbreak linked to Johnston County Hams caused four illnesses and one death. The illnesses were reported from Virginia and North Carolina.  Johnston County Hams, Inc. of Smithfield, North Carolina, issued a recall of ham products after the illnesses were reported.
