A Listeria outbreak linked to Tyson pre-cooked chicken has ended with three illnesses and one fatality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today.  Health officials used genetic tetsing to establish that the three outbreak patients were sickened by the identical strain of Listeria which was also found in two samples of pre-cooked chicken. The outbreak triggered a recall of d 8.5 million pounds of Tyson cooked chicken products.

Tyson Cooked Chicken Listeria Recalls

Tyson issued the massive recall after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) used food purchase records to trace back the source of the chicken,

The agency determined that Tyson’s facility in Dexter, MO “produced one of the products that tested positive for the outbreak strain, supplied product to another firm where a positive sample was collected, and distributed fully cooked chicken products to the long-term care facility and the hospital.”

The recalled precooked chicken products were sold nationwide under the brand names Casey’s General Store, Jet’s Pizza, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Marco Pizza, Tyson, and Tyson Red Label. The chicken was also used to make chicken salad sandwiches, Caesar salads, and chef salads prepared by LSG Sky Chefs of Phoenix that were sold at Circle K stores in Arizona and Southern California. A recall for those products was also issued.
