Updated June 19 with final outbreak information. Minnesota was one of the states hardest hit by a Salmonella outbreak linked to Infinite Herbs organic basil sold at Trader Joe’s. The 14-state outbreak sickened 36 people, hospitalizing four of them. Six people in Minnesota were sickened. With seven patients, Florida was the only other state with more cases.
The Minnesota patients were all from the Twin Cities metro area and that’s where all 10 Minnesota Trader Joe’s stores are located –
- Bloomington
- Eagan
- Maple Grove
- Minneapolis
- Minnetonka
- Rochester
- Shoreview
- St. Louis Park
- St. Paul
- Woodbury
The patients ranged in age from 1 to 78 years old. After eating Infinite Herbs organic basil, they developed symptoms of a Salmonella infection including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever between February 11, 2024 and May 26, 2024.
The Minnesota Department of Health worked with the Minnesota Agriculture Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate this outbreak.
The FDA said Trader Joe’s removed the tainted Infinite Herbs basil from store shelves in all states. Infinite Herbs issued a recall on April 18, 2024a, and expanded it the following day.
The recalled organic basil was sold in 2.5-oz clamshell packages at Trader Joe’s stores in the following states: AL, CT, D.C., DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, and WI. Consumers who have purchased this item should not eat it.
