An E. coli O26 outbreak at Torero’s Mexican Restaurant in Renton, WA during the first week of September sickened at least three customers. King County health officials have determined that three people from three different groups of customers developed E. coli O26 infections after eating at the restaurant between September 3 and September 7.
Symptoms of an E. coli infection usually develop within one to three days of exposure. They include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. All of the customers sickened in this outbreak developed these symptoms. Genetic tests on the E. coli cultured from their stool samples show that they were all sickened by the same strain.
On a September 30 visit to the restaurant, located at 920 N 10th St. in Renton, health inspectors identified two risk factors for this outbreak, “inadequate handwashing facilities and improper storage of raw meats.” Both of these risks can contribute to the spread of disease.
