The Cyclospora outbreak linked to bagged salad produced by Fresh Express and sold under store brand names has expanded to include eight states, 206 illnesses and 23 hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since the agency’s last update on June 23, 84 new cases have been identified an additional product has been recalled and the outbreak has spread to one more state, North Dakota.
The bagged salads associated with this outbreak distributed to 12 Midwestern states. All of them contain iceberg lettuce, carrots and red cabbage andd all of them were produced by Fresh Express.
Based in Salinas, CA, Fresh Express makes products that are sold under its own brand name and supplies products that are sold under store brand names. For example, in North Dakota six illnesses were reported by people who ate salad at a single restaurant that served Marketside brand bagged garden salad mix purchased from a Walmart store. Marketside is a Walmart brand name but the salad was made by Fresh Express. It is the fourth store brand to issue a recall in association with this outbreak.

Another Fresh Express Cyclospora Salad Outbreak
Symptoms of an infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite include explosive diarrhea that is sometimes watery, muscle aches, abdominal cramps, vomiting, fever and other flu-like symptoms.
Ranging in age from 16 to 92 years old, the people sickened in this outbreak reported the onset of Cyclospora symptoms on dates ranging from May 11, 2020 to June 17, 2020. The number of cases reported from each state is: Illinois (57), Iowa (74), Kansas (1), Minnesota (25), Missouri (10) Nebraska (20), North Dakota (6), and Wisconsin (13).
This is the second time in two years that Fresh Express salad has been linked to a Cyclospora outbreak. Fresh Express salad sold at McDonald’s was the source of a 2018 Cyclospora outbreak that sickened more than 500 people.
