A ground beef E. coli outbreak has sickened 196 people in 10 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure that affects some E. coli patients.

Nineteen more cases have been reported since the CDC’s last update on April 26, 2019.  The total number cases in each state is now: Florida (5), Georgia (49), Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Kentucky (69), Minnesota (1), Mississippi (1), Ohio (12), Tennessee (55) and Virginia (2).

The people sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from less than 1 year to 84 years old, reported eating ground beef at restaurants and at home before they became ill. Their onset of symptoms,  which include abdominal cramps and bloody diarrhea, ranged from March 1, 2019 to April 19, 2019.

During interviews with health officials, the case-patients named many different grocery stores where they reported buying ground beef in large trays or the long tube-shaped packages called “chubs.” They also named many restaurants. Neither the names of these restaurants nor the names of the grocery stores have released to the public.

Tennessee health officials collected and tested meat from a number of the implicated restaurants. A sample from one of them was positive for the outbreak strain of E. coli O103.

Ground Beef Recalls

The number of reported cases has been tapering off since two companies issued recalls. The first was K2D Foods, doing business as Colorado Premium Foods, in Carrollton, Ga., which recalled roughly 113,424 pounds of ground beef on  April 23. The second was Grant Park Packing of Franklin Park, IL which recalled approximately 53,200 pounds of raw ground beef on April 24.
