The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is searching for the food source of a Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate+ outbreak. So far, 14 people have developed infections from food contaminated with this strain formerly known as Salmonella Java. So, what other foods have caused multistate Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate+ outbreaks? Here’s a look.

 

 

Imported Frozen, Raw Tuna

Salmonella sushi outrbeakIn 2015, frozen, raw tuna imported from Indonesia was linked to a Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) outbreak that sickened 65 people in 11 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The tuna was used to make sushi. Eleven people were hospitalized.

The patients, who ranged in age from younger than 1 year old to 83 years old, reported symptoms dates ranging from March 5, 2015, to July 20, 2015.

The number of illnesses reported from each state was: Arizona (12), California (35), Illinois (1), Michigan (2), Minnesota (4), Mississippi (1), New Mexico (6), South Dakota (1), Virginia (1), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (1).

JEM Brand Raw, Sprouted Nut Butters

Salmonella but butter outbreakIn 2016, JEM brand raw, sprouted nut butters were linked to a 10-state Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) outbreak, according to the CDC. Thirteen people were sickened.

The patients, who ranged in age from less than 1 year old to 79 years old, reported the onset of symptoms on dates ranging from July 18, 2015, to November 22, 2015.

The number of cases reported from each state was: California (1), Colorado (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (1), Maine (1), New Jersey (1), North Carolina (1), and Oregon (4).
