Foods get contaminated with Salmonella when they make contact with fecal matter. This can happen to produce during the growing season if contaminated water or fertilizer is used, during the slaughter of animals or at any point in the food production process if an infected food handler does not wash hands properly after using the bathroom.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Usually, these set in between six and 72 hours of exposure and last about a week.
