A Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated onions and products containing them has grown to include 869 illnesses in 47 states, according to the latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One hundred and sixteen people have been hospitalized. Since the agency’s last update on August 7, 2020, an additional 229 illnesses have been reported, the outbreak has also spread to four more states.

The outbreak has been linked to onions produced by Thomson International of Bakersfield, CA which issued a recall for red, white, yellow and sweet yellow onions on August 1, 2020. The recalled onions were sold under a variety of brand names at grocery stores including ALDI, Costco, Food Lion, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Giant, Giant Eagle, Kroger, New Market, Publix, Smiths, Stop & Shop and Walmart.

The Thomson recall triggered a series of other recalls for products containing onions such as salsa, sandwiches, dips, wraps, kabobs, salads and stir fry. Some of these products were served at restaurants.
