ProSource Produce LLC of Hailey, Idaho has issued an onion Salmonella recall in connection with a multistate outbreak. The recalled red, yellow, and white onions were sold under the brand names Big Bull, Peak Fresh Produce, Sierra Madre, Markon First Crop., Markon Essentials, Rio Blue, ProSource, Rio Valley, and Sysco Imperial.
These onions should not be eaten or served as Salmonella can cause serious illness. Already more than 600 people have been sickened in this outbreak and more than 100 people got so sick they needed to be hospitalized.
The recalled onions were grown in Chihuahua, Mexico, and shipped to ProSource from July 1, 2021, to August 31, 2021. They were packaged in 50-lb., 25 lb., 10- lb., 5-lb., 3-lb., and 2 lb mesh sacks; and in 50-lb., 40-lb., 25-lb., 10-lb., and 5 lb. cartons.
ProSource customers that received the onions under recall for Salmonella include wholesalers, broadline foodservice establishments, and retail stores. These customers are located in Ontario and Quebec, Canada, and the following 35 states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WI.
Onion Salmonella Outbreak
This onion Salmonella outbreak includes 652 illnesses in 37 states. At least 129 people have been hospitalized. Many of the people sickened reported eating restaurant food containing onions before they became ill.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea that can be bloody. The people sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from less than 1 year old to 97 years old, said they first developed Salmonella symptoms on dates ranging from May 31, 2021, to September 30, 2021.
As of October 21, 2021, 652 illnesses have been reported from 37 states. The number of cases reported from each is: Alabama (3), Arkansas (12), California (9), Colorado (1), Connecticut (4), Florida (5), Georgia (2), Illinois (37), Indiana (1), Iowa (3), Kansas (14), Kentucky (9), Louisiana (5), Maryland (48), Massachusetts (12), Michigan (9), Minnesota (23), Mississippi (2), Missouri (21), Nebraska (8), New Jersey (5), New Mexico (8), New York (12), North Carolina (14), North Dakota (4), Ohio (7), Oklahoma (98), Oregon (2), Pennsylvania (7), South Carolina (3), South Dakota (8), Tennessee (10), Texas (158), Utah (3), Virginia (59), West Virginia (1), and Wisconsin (25).
