Peaches Salmonella Outbreak

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis,  include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. These symptoms usually develop within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food.

Using whole genome sequencing, health officials identified the genetic “fingerprint” of the strain of Salmonella Enteritidis associated with the illnesses in this outbreak. Matching  Salmonella fingerprints indicate  a common source of infection.

The people sickened in this outbreak range in age from 1 to 92 years old. They reported the onset of symptoms on dates ranging from June 29, 2020 to August 27, 2020. During interviews with outbreak investigators, most of the patients said they had eaten peaches in the days before they became ill.

By collecting records from grocery stores where patients had purchased the peaches, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted traceback and epidemiological investigations by collecting records from grocery stores where patients had purchased the peaches. These records revealed that the peaches associated with the illnesses in this outbreak were distributed by Wawona Packing Company, LLC.
