Shenandoah Growers Inc. of Harrisonburg, VA has issued a recall for organic basil sold under a variety of brand names that may be contaminated with Cyclospora. The recalled basil, sold under the brand names Fresh Cut, The Fresh Market, Good & Gather, Nature’s Promise, O Organics, SE Grocers, Simple Truth, That’s Tasty, Wild Harvest, was sold at stores between 10/20/2020 and 10/30/2020 and should no longer be on store shelves. Consumers who have these products at home should not eat them as Cyclospora can cause serious illness.
The recalled basil was sold in plastic clamshell containers at grocery stores in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Washington DC.
The recall was issued after the Florida Department of Agriculture discovered Cyclospora in a package during random product testing on 11/2/2020.
Cyclospora is a parasite. Symptoms of an infection include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, body aches and fatigue. These symptoms can last weeks or months if untreated with antibiotics.
