The onion Salmonella outbreak in Canada has ended with 515 illnesses, 79 hospitalizations and three deaths. Seventy-nine people were hospitalized, three people died. Illnesses have also been reported in the U.S. where the outbreak is still ongoing with 1,012 reported as of September 1, 2020. In both countries, the outbreak was linked to onions produced by Thomson International of Bakersfield, CA that were sold under a variety of brand names at dozens of stores. Thomson, grocery stores and other retailers issued recalls for onions and products containing them.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. The Canadians sickened in this outbreak, reported developing these symptoms after eating onions at home or in items they ate at restaurants and residential care facilities.
