Ten illnesses associated with a Nekter Juice Bar in Woodbury, Minnesota are part of a four-state Salmonella Paratyphi outbreak that has sickened 18 people. Since the Minnesota Health Department discovered the outbreak in October, it has grown to include one additional confirmed case in Minnesota and eight more illnesses in three other states. Customers of the Woodbury Nekter (NéktƏr) location reported ordering juices, smoothies and bowls before they became ill.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not disclosed whether the illnesses outside Minnesota are also associated with Nekter locations or which other states are reporting cases. The CDC and state health officials are still working to pinpoint a specific food source for the outbreak.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection usually develop six to 72 hours after contaminated food is ingested. They include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Salmonella Paratyphi can cause a life-threatening illness called paratyphoid fever.
A wide variety of ingredients are used to prepare Nekter menu items. They include: fresh fruits and vegetables, cashew milk, peanut butter, almond butter, chia seeds, hemp seeds, hemp hearts, coconut flakes, agave nectar, granola, goji berries and more. Several of these ingredients have been associated with Salmonella outbreaks in the past.
