Multiple Cases of Cyclospora Food Poisoning Reported in New York

Multiple cases of Cyclospora food poisoning have been reported in New York’s Capital Region. The New York State Department of Health (DOH) is investigating the illnesses, along with the Albany County Department of Health, Montgomery County Public Health, Saratoga County Public Health, and Schenectady County Public Health Services. Several of the people who became sick reported eating at the following food establishments.

  • The Italian American Community Center in Albany
  • A buffet during a private graduation event at Union College in Schenectady
  • Prime Life Restaurant at Beltrone Senior Living Community Center in Colonie

As the investigation continues, more establishments may be identified. Health officials found no link between the illnesses and poor food handling or preparation. A statement issued by the DOH says that “contamination of produce with Cyclospora often occurs prior to arrival at food distribution centers and restaurants.” Produce is often the culprit of Cyclospora outbreaks. Last summer, hundreds of people fell ill in Cyclospora outbreaks linked to fresh produce, including a McDonald’s outbreak from salad, and another linked to Del Monte veggie trays sold by Kwik Trip.
