Mecox Bay Dairy, LLC of Brideghampton, NY has issued a recall for Mecox Sunrise washed-rind Tomme style cheese for possible Listeria contamination. Consumers who have purchased this cheese, made from unpasteurized milk, should not eat it as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. At the time of the recall, no illnesses had been reported.

The recalled cheese was sold at several retail locations on Long Island. It was also supplied to a Long Island restaurant and one in Chicago.  It is packaged in clear plastic wrap with “Mecox Sunrise” on the label. According to the company’s recall information, all of the product has been removed from stores and restaurants

The problem was discovered during routine testing by the  New York State Agriculture and Markets Division of Milk Control. These tests revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of Mecox Sunrise cheese.

The company has suspended production of the product while state and federal health officials conduct an investigation and try to determine the source of the contamination.
