Packaged sandwiches are the source of a Listeria outbreak that has sickened 10 people in two states. All of them were hospitalized.
Whole genome sequencing tests indicate that packaged sandwiches made by Fresh & Ready Foods were tainted with the same Listeria strain that was cultured from patients. The San Fernando-based company has issued a recall for sandwiches and snacks sold under the brand names Fresh & Ready Foods, Fresh Take Crave Away, and City Point Market Fresh Food to Go. The recalled items were sold on airlines and at retail stores, hospitals, hotels, and airports in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington.
Packaged Sandwiches Listeria Outbreak
This packaged sandwiches Listeria outbreak began in 2023, but previous attempts to pinpoint its exact food source were unsuccessful, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Six of the patients, who range in age from 41 to 87 years old, contracted their infections after they were served the now-recalled sandwiches when they were hospitalised. Six are male, four are female. Eight live in California, two live in Nevada.
What are the Symptoms of Listeria Infection?
Symptoms of a Listeria infection usually develop within one to 14 days of exposure. But sometimes it can take as long as 10 weeks for symptoms to appear. Often they will start with gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and are followed by:
- High Fever
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Muscle aches
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Convulsions
Pregnant women are at heightened risk of developing Listeria infections and can suffer a miscarraige or stillbirth even if they only experience mild flu-like symptoms.
