Dogs with Salmonella infections may experience a variety of symptoms including fatigue, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea that may be bloody. Infected dogs may also experience no symptoms. Regardless of symptoms, infected dogs can be carriers infecting humans or other pets. People with Salmonella infections may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that can be bloody.

Freshpet had set aside the contaminated lot for destruction, but it was inadvertently shipped to Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia; some Target stores, and other select retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.
