Three people are dead and 14 more are sick in a Listeria outbreak linked to chicken fettuccine Alfredo sold at Walmart and Kroger. Both retailers have issued recalls.
Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo Listeria Outbreak
The 17 outbreak patients, ranging in age from 4 to 92 years old, reported experiencing symptoms on dates from July 24, 2024, to May 10, 2025. Sixteen of them required hospitalization, and a pregnant woman suffered a fetal loss.
Whole-genome sequencing tests showed that the genetic fingerprints of the Listeria strains cultured from the patients matched each other, indicating that they all consumed the same contaminated food. So far, health officials have interviewed 11 of the patients. Seven recalled eating pre-cooked meals before they became ill. Four of them specifically said they ate chicken fettuccine Alfredo purchased from the refrigerated section at Walmart and Kroger.
Investigators were able to determine that Fresh Realm made fettuccine products sold at Walmart and Kroger . The Indianapolis-based company operates facilities in San Clemente, CA, Montezuma, GA, and Indianapolis.
On March 19, 2025, investigators from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) found Listeria in chicken fettuccine alfredo collected during routine sampling. The strain’s genetic fingerprint matched the outbreak strain. This lot was not released into the food supply.
Investigators from USDA FSIS and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have tested ingredients from suppliers to the company, but none has contained the outbreak strain.
