Boar’s Head Listeria Recall at Target, Kroger, Stop And Shop…
A Listeria recall for Boar’s Head liverwurst and other deli meats now includes 7 million pounds of meat sold at grocery stores nationwide including Target, Kroger, Stop And Shop, Schnucks, H-E-B, Big Y, and others. The recall is associated with a 13-state Listeria outbreak that has sickened 34 people killing two of them.
Consumers who have recently purchased deli-sliced liverwurst, ham, bologna, salami, or other deli meats should check recall information carefully as Listeria causes severe illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
Deli meat is one of the foods frequently associated with Listeria. And outbreaks often include fatalities.
Listeria Symptoms
Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, usually develop within 24 hours of exposure but can sometimes take as long as 70 days to appear. They include:
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck, other muscle aches
- Nausea, abdominal cramps or diarrhea
- Loss of balance, confusion, or convulsions
- Flu-like symptoms in pregnant women
Among pregnant women, Listeria infections can cause premature delivery of an infected newborn, miscarriage, or stillbirth even if the expectant mother experiences only mild flu-like symptoms.
Boar’s Head Liverwurst and Deli Meat Listeria Recall
Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Inc. of Jarratt, VA issued a recall on July 26 after Maryland health officials found Listeria in an unopened package of liverwurst collected from a grocery store. The recall was expanded on July 30 to include 71 kinds of meat after whole genome sequencing tests showed the Listeria strain found in the liverwurst matches the strain cultured from patients.
