Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon sold at Publix has been recalled for possible Listeria contamination. Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it as Listeria can cause serious illness and death.
The problem was discovered during routine testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Smoked fish is one of the foods at elevated risk for Listeria contamination, along with sprouts, unpasteurized dairy products, lunch meats and pâtés. According to the study, Listeria monocytogenes in Vacuum‐Packed Smoked Fish Products: Occurrence, Routes of Contamination, and Potential Intervention Measures, Listeria contamination of vacuum-packed smoked fish can occur due to poor food safety practices, contamination in manufacturing environments, and “temperature abuse during prolonged storage in retail outlets.”
