The Big Olaf ice cream Listeria outbreak includes 23 people from 10 states including Minnesota. On July 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that Big Olaf ice cream is the source of the outbreak that has caused one death and one fetal loss.
Most of the cases are concentrated in Florida, the only state where Big Olaf operates. And most of the patients who live in other states visited Florida before they became ill, the CDC said. Health officials have interviewed 17 patients about the foods they ate in the month before they developed symptoms of listeriosis. Fourteen of them said they ate ice cream. Six specified Big Olaf ice cream or ice cream at locations that serve Big Olaf.
Big Olaf Creamery has not issued a recall. Instead, the company told health officials that it would contact retailers and recommend that they don’t sell the ice cream.

States reporting illnesses include: Colorado (1), Florida (12), Georgia (1), Illinois (1), Kansas (1), Massachusetts (2), Minnesota (1), New Jersey (1), New York (2) and Pennsylvania (1).
Eleven of the patients, who range in age from less than 1 year old to 92 years old, are female Five of them became ill during their pregnancy.
Symptoms of Listeriosis
Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, can take as long as 70 days to develop. Sometimes initial symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. But the hallmark of a Listeria infection is a severe headache, accompanied by high fever, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Among pregnant women, listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
