The FDA is currently investigating three Salmonella outbreaks, one linked to Jif peanut butter, and two more with unknown sources. Here’s what we know so far.

Jif Salmonella Outbreak

Jif Salmonella RecallBetween February 19, 2022, and  May 2, 2022, 16 people in 12 states developed Salmonella Senftenberg infections after eating contaminated Jif peanut butter, according to the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two people have been hospitalized.

Jif Salmonella Recall celery and peanut butter snackA Jif recall includes 48 varieties of peanut butter including creamy, crunchy, honey, and natural peanut butter sold in a variety of sizes and containers including jars, cans, and squeezable pouches. Recalls have also been issued for products containing peanut butter. (Clink the recall link to see a full list.)

Mystery Salmonella Outbreaks

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced two Salmonella outbreaks with unidentified food sources. This week both of them increased in size.

A Salmonella Braenderup outbreak increased from 40 to 42 illnesses and a Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate+ outbreak increased from 13 to 14 illnesses.  The FDA did not provide any further information such as the age of the patients, if they were hospitalized or where they reside.

Previous outbreaks have been linked to each of these Salmonella strains. Salmonella Braenderup was the source of multistate outbreaks linked to shell eggs, nut butter, and mangoes. Salmonella Paratyphi B variant. L(+) tartrate+ was the source of outbreaks linked to raw, sprouted nut butters and frozen, raw tuna.
