Golden Medal Mushroom Inc. of Los Angeles has again issued a recall for enoki mushrooms that may be contaminated with Listeria. Ten months ago, the company issued a recall for enoki mushrooms imported from Korea. This time the mushrooms are from China.
At the time of the recall, the company said it was unaware of any illnesses associated with the mushrooms. However, symptoms of a Listeria infection can take as long as 70 days to develop. Consumers who ate the mushrooms now under recall should monitor themselves for symptoms and see a doctor right away if they develop. These symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women are at risk of miscarriage or stillbirth even if they only experience mild symptoms.
The recalled enoki mushrooms, sold in 200g/7.05-ounce vacuum-sealed plastic packages, have the lot code # 300511 and the UPC 6 953150 100684. No business name or address appears on the package.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development discovered the problem during routine testing. Distribution of the product has been suspended.
In 2020, a Listeria outbreak linked to enoki mushrooms imported from Korea by other companies sickened 36 people from 17 states. Four people died. Six of the outbreak patients were pregnant women, two of them suffered miscarriages.
