Are beef products the source of a Salmonella Muenchen outbreak? The U.S Department of Agricultures’s Food Safety Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) suspects they are and has opened an investigation but provided no further information.
A few weeks ago, USDA FSIS announced it was investigating an E. coli outbreak linked to beef products. Generally, when USDA FSIS suspects that hamburger is the source of an outbreak it specifies “ground beef.” With both of these outbreaks, the suspected source is listed as “beef.”
Ground beef is a common culprit in food poisoning outbreaks. That’s because grinding beef mixes bacteria that might be on the exterior of a cut of meat throughout the finished product.
Often ground beef outbreaks are associated with E. coli bacteria. But outbreaks have also been linked to Salmonella.
