The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) has issued a public health alert for Our Local Smokehouse brand chili cheese flavored wieners that may be contaminated with Listeria.  USDA FSIS issued the alert on October 1, after being notified that the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture found some of the products, made by Family Fare of Chippewa Falls,  were contaminated during routine testing.

USDA FSIS did not ask the company to issue a recall because the products, made on September 21, 2022, were no longer being sold. However, the agency is concerned that some consumers may have the recalled product in their freezers.

Consumers who do have these products in their freezers should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria infections can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

Symptoms of a Listeria infection usually set in within a day of eating contaminated food but can take  as long as 70 days to develop. They include severe headache, stiff neck, high fever, muscle aches, confusion, and loss of balance. Sometimes these symptoms are preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. .
