The New York Department of Agriculture is warning consumers that raw milk produced by Miller Dairy Farm in Pine Island, NY tested positive for Listeria and should not be consumed as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
On April 21, 2022, the New York State Department of Agriculture notified Thomas Miller DBA Miller Dairy Farm that preliminary test results of a raw milk sample were positive for Listeria. Eight days later, further testing confirmed the results. Miller Dairy Farm was then notified that it could not sell any raw milk until subsequent sampling showed it was free of harmful bacteria.
Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, include severe headache, stiff neck, high fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriage or stillbirth even if they experience only mild listeriosis symptoms.
