The bagged salad Cyclospora outbreak has ended but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is continuing its investigation, the agency said this week. The 14-state outbreak, linked to bagged salads produced by Fresh Express and sold under a variety of brand names, sickened 701 people hospitalizing 38 of them.
The salads were sold under the Fresh Express brand name and a variety of store brands including ALDI Little Salad Bar, Giant Eagle, Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco Signature Farms, ShopRite Wholesome Pantry, and Walmart Marketside.
All of the salads contained iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrots, salads, and all of them were produced at the Fresh Express facility in Streamwood, IL. Multiple recalls were issued.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared an end to the outbreak on September 24 after no new illnesses had been reported for two months. That same day, the FDA announced that it would be continuing its investigation because the source of the outbreak still has not been identified.
The FDA’s traceback investigation led to a farm in Florida where it is continuing to work with the state of Florida and the local water district to try to determine how the parasite made its way into the regional water management canal (C-23) near Port St. Lucie and what appropriate mitigation measures can be taken.
