Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad is being recalled in connection with a six-state bagged salad Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened more than 70 people. The salad was produced by Fresh Express and also sold under store brand names at ALDI and Jewel-Osco. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them.
The recalled Hy-Vee garden salad, which contains iceberg lettuce, carrots and red cabbage, was sold in 12 oz. packages at Hy-Vee grocery stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. It includes all UPC codes. No other Hy-Vee food items are impacted by this recall.
Symptoms of a Cyclospora infection include diarrhea that is watery and explosive, cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, fever and other flu-like symptoms. If untreated, these symptoms can persist for weeks or months. People with underlying health conditions and those who have weakened immune systems may be at higher risk for severe or prolonged illness.
So far, this outbreak includes cases in six states: Iowa (28), Illinois (23), Kansas (1), Minnesota (13), Missouri (7) and Nebraska (7). The case patients range in age from 16 to 92 years old. They reported onset of Cyclospora symptoms on dates ranging from May 11, 2020, to June 14, 2020, after eating bagged salads they had purchased from grocery stores. Sixteen people have been hospitalized.
