Three recalls for frozen produce this week show that freezing is one of the many extreme conditions that Listeria can survive. Three frozen products were recalled this week for potential Listeria contamination. At the time the recalls were issued, no illnesses had been reported. However, symptoms of a Listeria monocytogenes infection can take as long as 70 days after exposure to develop. They include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and upset stomach. If you develop these symptoms, see a doctor.
On June 17, Sprouts Farmers Market of Phoenix, AZ issued a recall for conventional and organic Frozen Cut Leaf Spinach sold in 16oz bags. The recalled product has the UPC 87487500982, Lot 19031203A03 and USE BY 12/03/21. The recalled product was sold at Sprouts stores in AZ, CA, NV, UT, NM, CO, TX, KS, OK, MO, TN, AL, GA, FL, SC, NC, PA, MD, and VA.
On June 18, Nature’s Touch Frozen Foods West Inc. issued a recall for Signature Select brand frozen avocado chunks sold at Albertsons, Safeway and other stores. The recall includes products sold in 12 0z packages with the UPC 2113009412 and “best before” dates of Oct 11, 20. They were sold at Albertsons, Safeway, Safeway Community Markets, Carrs-Safeway, Eagle, Lucky, Pak N Save, Pavillions, and Vons stores in 16 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming, Texas and Utah.
On June 19, UNFI issued a recall for 10OZ packages of Woodstock frozen Organic Grilled Red Peppers. The recalled products marked with UPC code 4256301714 have the lot #60B, and an expiration date of April 2020 stamped on the back of the package. They were distributed nationally.
