The FDA and CDC are investigating two “mystery” Listeria outbreaks. One has sickened 18 people, the other has sickened 20 people. As the federal agencies work to determine the food sources of these outbreaks, here’s a look at the five multistate outbreaks that occurred before these two as yet unsolved outbreaks.

Fresh Express Salads Listeria Outbreak
A Listeria outbreak linked to Fresh Express salad ended in March 2022nwith 10 illnesses and one death. The illnesses were reported from July 26, 2016, to October 19, 2021, and included patients who ranged in age from 44 to 95 years old. All of the patients were hospitalized. The death was reported from Pennsylvania.
Dole Packaged Salads Listeria Outbreak
A Listeria outbreak linked to Dole packaged salads sickened 18 people in 13 states, hospitalizing 16. Three people died. The 18 patients, who ranged in age from 50 to 94 years, reported illnesses that began on dates ranging from August 16, 2014, to January 15, 2022. Salads produced by Dole and recalled in association with this outbreak were sold under the following brand names: Ahold, Dole, Kroger, Lidl, Little Salad Bar, Marketside, Naturally Better, Nature’s Promise, and Simply Nature.
Fully Cooked Chicken Listeria Outbreak
A Listeria outbreak linked to Tyson pre-cooked chicken ended in September 2021 with three illnesses and one death. The people sickened, who ranged in age from 60 to 95 years years old, reported the onset of illness on dates ranging from April 6, 2021, to June 5, 2021. All three patients were hospitalized. One illness was reported from Delaware, two illnesses -including the only fatality, were reported from Texas.
The outbreak triggered a recall of 8.5 million pounds of Tyson cooked chicken products. The products were sold nationwide under the brand names Casey’s General Store, Jet’s Pizza, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Marco Pizza, Tyson, and Tyson Red Label. A secondary recall for chicken salad sandwiches, Caesar salads, and chef salads prepared by LSG Sky Chefs of Phoenix that were sold at Circle K stores in Arizona and Southern California was also issued.
Queso Fresco Listeria Outbreak
The Listeria outbreak linked to El Abuelito queso fresco ended with 13 illnesses and one death in May 2021. The outbreak included illnesses in four states: Connecticut (1) Maryland (5) New York (4), and Virginia (3) Twelve people were hospitalized. The death was reported in Maryland.
Deli Meats Listeria Outbreak
A four-state Listeria outbreak linked to deli meat ended with 12 illnesses, 12 hospitalizations, and one death. The illnesses were reported from Florida (1), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (7), and New York (3) among patients ranging in age from 40 to 89 years old.
