The Listeria outbreak linked to chicken fettuccine Alfredo sold at Walmart and Kroger has resulted in deaths in Michigan, Illinois, and Texas. Thirteen states have reported a total of 17 illnesses, 16 hospitalizations, three deaths, and one fetal loss.

Like other foodborne bacteria, Listeria can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. But if the infection reaches the bloodstream, sepsis can occur, causing organ damage or death. A Listeria infection of the nervous system can cause loss of balance, seizure, stroke, permanent neurological impairment, coma, and death.

Listeria also poses a substantial risk to pregnant women, who are 10 times more likely than the general population to contract Listeria infections. And, as was so sadly the case in this outbreak, they can experience tragic outcomes such as miscarriage or stillbirth.

The people sickened in this outbreak range in age from 4 to 92 years old. They began experiencing symptoms of a Listeria infection between July 24, 2024, and May 10, 2025. Whole genome sequencing tests performed on the Listeria strains cultured from the patients showed that the genetic fingerprints all matched. This indicates that patients ate the same contaminated food.

During interviews with health officials, patients said they had eaten pre-cooked meals before they became ill. Four of them specifically said they ate chicken fettuccine Alfredo purchased from the refrigerated section at Walmart and Kroger. A recall
