Ten people have been hospitalized in a Salmonella outbreak at Carniceria Guanajuato in Chicago. And at least 10 more have been sickened, according to city health officials, who are still working to determine the food source of the outbreak. They are warning customers who have purchased any prepared food from the taqueria or the prepared food section of the grocery store since August 29, 2023, not to eat it.

The voluntarily closed on September 8, 2023, and is cooperating with the Chicago Department of Public Health’s investigation.

During a September 8 inspection of the restaurant, located at 3140 N California in Chicago,  inspectors found several food safety violations including:

  • Raw beef and eggs stored above ready-to-eat food such as sliced lettuce
  • Coolers with missing thermometers
  • Cold foods stored above 41˚F, sliced tomatoes with an internal temperature of 48˚F
  • Mineral deposits and soil buildup in the ice machine
