Illinois Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak
A ground beef Salmonella outbreak in Illinois has sickened 26 people in six counties. Between April 25 and May 18, illnesses were reported from Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties.
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is working with local health departments, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to determine which company produced the meat and whether other illnesses are part of this outbreak.
USDA FSIS began investigating a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak with ground beef as a suspected source on May 26.
Symptoms of a Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis, include nausea, fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea that can be bloody. Generally, these symptoms appear within six to 72 hours of exposure.
