Listeria Outbreak Linked to Revolution Farms Salad

Revolution Farms, a company based in Caledonia, Michigan, issued a recall for lettuce and salad kits that have been linked to a multi-state Listeria outbreak. The recall was initiated after the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) randomly tested a package of Revolution Farms lettuce for Listeria and it came back positive.

Further tests conducted by Michigan health officials revealed that the Listeria strain in the recalled product was epidemiologically linked with a multi-state outbreak of listeriosis, according to an expanded recall notification.

What that notice doesn’t-make clear is that the outbreak occurred last year. On April 17, 2023, Food Poisoning Bulletin reported that the recalled salad products are not connected with any outbreak currently under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), rather the Listeria strain that Michigan health officials found in the salad sample is genetically related to a 2022 Listeria outbreak with an unknown source. An agency spokesperson told the publication that “there are no known illnesses or adverse events related to these recalled products reported to FDA to date.”

Where Were Recalled Salads Sold?

The recalled products include various packaged salads and heads of lettuce that were sold to retailers and food service distributors in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. The outbreak prompted several brands to issue secondary recalls and a health alert for salads made with Revolution Farms lettuce, including Meijer, Fresh Express, Publix, Fruit Ridge Farms, and BELL’S BISTRO.
